The Old Crown Court & Cells

High West Street, Dorchester. Fascinating experience, encompassing four centuries of crime and punishment. This is a place most famous for the trial of the six Tolpuddle Martyrs in 1834 who were sentenced and eventually transported to Australia - the court remains almost as it was at that time. Sit in the dimly-lit cells where prisoners once waited for their appearance before the judge.

Colliton Park, Dorchester Of the many Roman buildings discovered in Dorchester (DVRNOVARIA) this is the best preserved and was excavated in 1936/9, prior to the building of County Hall. Recently the site was re-excavated revealing a range of mosiac floors and these are now protected by buildings with a reconstructed Roman roof. Many excavation finds are on display in the County Museum.
