The 17th century Castle was built as a hunting lodge and has been the seat of the Weld family since 1641. In 1929 the Castle was tragically ravaged by fire and it lay in ruins until its restoration by English Heritage. It is a narrow tangle of streets and shops leading down to the harbour with its famous Cobb, a curving stone wall made famous by the film The French Lieutenant's Woman.
